Legend Isobaric Small Red

To say that we were excited when Dr Rod Crawford from Legend Acoustics walked through our door with these under his arm is an understatement. They've been playing in our listening room for all of 10 minutes and they've already managed to demand the attention of everyone in the store. Let's just say not much work is being done, just a lot of intent listening. My single word review so far would go something like this - "Astonishing"

The Isobaric Small Reds are based on the Big Red 2s which themselves built on our learning from the top-of-the-range Tikandi loudspeakers. It uses a similar truncated pyramidal shaped cabinet as the Tikandi with its non-parallel sides to minimise internal reflections and triangular front baffle to minimise edge diffraction effects. And of course they are very solidly built to minimise cabinet resonances.

To tailor the loudspeaker to only passive crossovers they had to make some changes to the drivers from those used in the Tikandis. The mid-range driver is a superb Seas Nextel 130mm unit which has more gentle cone break-up that does not intrude into the mid-range pass-band even with the gentler slopes of passive crossovers. They have retained the Tikandi's (and original Big Red's) ceramic-coated aluminium 25mm tweeter with its superb accuracy across the frequencies above 2.5 kHz.

Unlike the Big Red 2s (and Tikandis) the Isobaric Small Reds do not have a separate large bass module. Using Dr Rod's experience at Linn with the Sara, Isobarik and Keltik loudspeakers (see Legend Story) they have mounted two Scanspeak bass drivers in isobaric configuration to achieve deep bass in a relatively small single cabinet. It gives usable bass to well below 40 Hz that is also very tight, fast and detailed.

Thus the Isobaric Small Reds cover the range of human hearing from deep bass to sparkling highs with very uniform fequency response to faithfully retain the tonal character of music and voices. And by minimising driver and cabinet resonances they have the fast, open natural sound that makes all Legend loudspeakers famous.

Nordost System Tuning & Setup Disc

We have just received the new Nordost  System tuning & setup discs. The disc contains everything you will need to setup and "burn in" a new or existing system and having it sounding its absolute best

Among lots of other goodies, it contains a De-Gauss track which will get rid of any built up magnetism hanging around your system, which I feel is a necessary task that should be performed at least every 6 months.

As well as basic channel and phase checks (boring we know, but oh so useful) there are discrete left and right channel pink and white noise tracks, as well as alternating ones, which are ideal for checking that speakers are working properly and voicing them in-room. The computer generated LEDR tests provide a repeatable method for mapping and adjusting sound-staging and toe-in while uncompressed drum tracks test dynamic range and rhythmic integration. As well as conventional sweeps, there is a timed low-frequency sweep that will allow you to identify principal room modes. Used in conjunction with the discrete low-frequency tones this is a huge help in diagnosing problem environments, placing speakers and integrating and optimizing sub-woofers. Throw in system burn-in and degauss tracks and you can see why we consider this an invaluable part of our audio armoury. In fact, the only thing missing is the plinky-plonky audiophile music tracks that clutter up most test CDs!
