The Watson Twins - Fire Songs

A friend recommended this to me a couple of months ago. I'll have to get him something for Christmas because this music has been a constant delight and rarely off my CD either at home or in the shop.

The Watson twins are Chandra and Leigh Watson, veterans of the folk/rock scene in Los Angeles and this, their debut album, mixes folk, country and gospel influences to create something soulful and moving. From the nostalgic sounding first track "How am I to be" to the last this record captivates and enthralls.

Our homes are filling up with electronic gadgets; hi fi, televisions, computers, air-conditioners etc. This is good (especially for us as we sell some of them), but each device connected to the mains in your house sends a signal back into the mains circuit. Now it's my turn to give you some musical enlightenment (hopefully). Eugene McDaniels - Headless Heros of the Apocalypse, Atlantic Records 1971.

Now for me this album is up there as one of the all time greats, but what the hell would I know. All I can say is listen and within a week you'll be searching out all his work...Genius.

What We're Listening To

Hi Fi, when it comes down to it, is all about music. In this regular feature (time permitting) one of the Hi Fi Junction staff will talk about the music they're listening to at the moment. We will include links to samples so you can listen for yourself and either snigger at our poor taste in music or find something you like that you wouldn't have heard otherwise.

I'm up first this week with the latest album from The Decemberists entitled The Crane Wife. The band from Portland, Oregon seem to defy easy description with folk and rock influences blending into something strange and different. I listened to their previous album, Picaresque, for weeks non-stop but took a bit longer getting into this one. This album won't be to everyone's taste but it might just surprise you.

The New York Times reviewer said that "As a sustained effort, it represents the band’s sharpest and most satisfying work, and one of the most accomplished albums of its kind this year."

We had a Cayin A-50T in the store recently as a trade in and were very impressed. So much so that we decided to stock the A-55T and the matching hybrid CD player, the CD-50T, and we will be expanding to have the full range. (Details here)

They have only been on the floor for a day and, like all valve components, need a fair bit of running in but they are sounding pretty good already. They have a warm involving sound and look terrific. Come in, listen and enjoy.
